Content Delivery
In website development terms, “Content” typically refers to deliverables provided by the “client” – you! Whether that is in the form of articles, copywriting, images and/or other media. Depending on your individual project’s needs, some of these might also be done by us, or outsourced to other experts. But generally there is some kind of content contribution by you, even if we just work together to create a brief of what you need and want.
It’s important to identify the content that’s needed early, as content delivery is often the biggest hurdle that can hold up a project’s completion. Styling and design especially can be held up if there is no content to style. And of course, you can’t launch a site with placeholder text and images. So apart from feedback, it’s usually your main “job” as the client to provide the needed content.
Feedback Participation
I’ll cover the “how” of what makes for a smooth feedback process in more detail after we’ve covered the overall project process, but want to quickly cover here WHY it’s so important…
Let’s imagine for a moment, that based on your goals and content, I deliver and launch an entire working website… But you hate it! Where would we go from there? Probably nowhere, as you might have to start over. Obviously this is an extreme example, but if you end up disliking even parts of your website, we could have done better.
While I do my very best to develop and design a site that fits you, your business, and your needs, it is a creative process. Your first set of project drafts are exactly that – drafts! It’s the starting point, and from there, your feedback becomes absolutely essential to the process so that I can deliver a website that you are truly happy with.
Whether they regard design, marketing or functionality, these “drafts” need feedback to get where you want, whether that is at the first or final draft stage. Since the design and marketing aspects are more subjective, they usually require more feedback than planning out the functionality, which is more objective. But in any case, it’s always a necessary process that can’t be skipped.
Once you indicate you are happy with a draft, that’s an approval for us to use it in the production or “live” site. That doesn’t mean it has to be perfect, or that it can’t be changed later, but since that can mean additional billable work later, it’s more time and cost effective to get it to a stage you are happy before it’s published.
